One of the most recognizable symbols of día de Muertos (aside from the Calaveritas and cempasúchil flowers) is the monarch butterfly. Since monarch butterflies migrate south during the winter season (coincides with Día de muertos) some of the indigenous communities in Mexico saw the arrival of the monarchs as a spiritual symbol—representing the souls of their ancestors returning to visit their loved ones.

They believed that human souls did not die, but instead continued to live in Mictlan, a resting place for the souls until the day they could return to visit their relatives—Día de los Muertos.

*Calaveritas y Monarcas is a print that was created as ONE my annual 2021 Día de muertos prints.

The design was sketched and carved by hand, then printed with traditional oil based printmaking ink onto 100% cotton, acid free paper. Each piece will be titled, signed and labeled as a Variable Edition out of 24.

*This block is printed on white Stonehenge 250 gsm paper, and the Monarchs and Calaverita designs are individually hand painted with watercolor paint.

Each print is produced using a manual printing press, therefore, each print will be unique and may differ slightly from the pictured original. This is the beauty of linoleum block printing.
